This week Mathematics has been a focus across all year groups. From first thing Monday morning there was a buzz of excitement amongst both staff and students. As the days have gone on the children have applied their skills and knowledge to many different real-life contexts. For example, Year 3 have been learning how to use pictograms to present data, Year 4 have been using games and online platforms to extend their understanding of coins and money. Year 5 are designing and creating a three-dimensional model of their ideal playground and Year 6 have been looking at how maths occurs everywhere linking their observations of the natural world to the Fibonacci sequence, researching famous mathematicians and looking at maths in art using M.C Escher as inspiration. Across the entire school all the classes have been investigating, learning, and enjoying maths in practical and exciting ways. The teachers have had the opportunity to visit other classrooms to share books and activities: Mrs Perkins went to Reception class and told them a story about a very angry ladybird and listened to the children’s excellent counting, Miss Antony visited Year 6 for a game of bingo and Mrs Sherlock set Year 6 a problem based on a story with lots and lots of legs! At a Key Stage 2 assembly, the children all said how much they have enjoyed the practical activities and being able to take maths lessons outside the classroom and had some excellent ideas for Maths Week 2026!
