The Local Governing Body - What we do

All schools and academies in England have a Governing Body which is responsible for overseeing many of the strategic decisions of the school.  The Headteacher is responsible for day-to-day leadership and running of the school.  The Local Governing Body provide strategic direction and act as a “critical friend”; to support, challenge, ask questions, and ultimately, represent the school community.

The Local Governing Body are involved with such things as the school budget, resources, infrastructure, safeguarding, academic performance, and, key issues which affect the school. Ultimately the governing body hold the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff.  Governors appoint the Headteacher and are involved in the appointment of the Deputy Headteacher.  The Chair of Governors and a sub-section of the governing body are also involved in Pay and Salaries Reviews and the Headteacher's Performance Review.

The Pyrcroft Grange Local Governing Body meet once a term.  There are three sub-committees  which meet once or twice a term, and Class Governors:

  • Resources - To ensure that the school's spending remains within budget and that all funds are spent wisely to meet the best needs or the pupils.  The committe also provides input on staffing pay and health and safety issues.
  • Safeguarding and Welfare - To discuss and monitor all aspects for the school's pastoral work which includes attendance, behaviour, safeguarding, and ensuring all Child Protection policies are fully understood and correctly implemented by all staff.
  • Student Performance and Progress - To discuss and monitor all aspects of the school's work around pupil attainment and progress, and ensure that the curriculum is broad, balanced and stretching.
  • Class Governors -  Parent and Co-opted Governors each take responsibility for a class within the school (see photos below). They are invited into class to talk to teachers, look at the learning environment, meet the children, attend class assemblies and be kept informed on overall progress levels in their class.  This ensures our governors are connected with the school on many levels, and enables them to make informed decisions.

Who are we?

The Governing Body consists of elected Co-opted, Parent and Staff Governors, and the Headteacher.   The Chair and Vice Chair are elected annually at the first meeting of the academic year.  Each governor has a term of office of four years.
